This October, the University of Toronto’s UNICEF chapter embraced the Halloween spirit with a creative twist on fundraising: the “Prof-in-a-Prop” event. Our concept was simple: professors donned costumes during lectures—think bunny ears or a full banana suit—in exchange for a minimum donation of $1 per student. The result? Hilarious lectures and substantial funds raised for UNICEF’s life-saving campaigns in over 190 countries.

The event wasn’t just about the costumes (though seeing our chemistry professor explain molecular bonds dressed as a wizard was priceless). It was also an opportunity for our representatives to visit classrooms, share the vital work UNICEF does globally, and highlight how even small contributions can make a big impact. The energy in the rooms was palpable as students eagerly pitched in, excited to witness their professors trade professionalism for playful antics—all for a great cause.

We’re thrilled to report that the fundraiser exceeded expectations, with hundreds of students participating. This annual event is quickly becoming a campus favorite. Mark your calendars for next year—you never know what prop might make its way to your lecture hall!
